Complaint kelimesi temel olarak iki ana anlamda kullanılır:

Şikâyet / yakınma: Bir durumdan memnuniyetsizliği dile getirme, bir hatayı veya haksızlığı bildirme.
- Örn. bir ürün/hizmetle ilgili şikâyet, müşteri şikâyeti.

Tıpta “şikâyet” (belirti yakınması): Hastanın hissettiği rahatsızlığı ifade etmesi (ör. “baş ağrısı şikâyeti”).
- “Chief complaint” = hastanın başvuru sebebi / temel şikâyet.
