l’aigu

The French adjective "aigu" (feminine: aiguë or sometimes aigüe) means sharp, high-pitched, or acute, depending on the context, and it is used both literally and figuratively.

Meanings:

1. Sharp (physical shape or quality):
It describes something with a fine point, like a sharp edge or angle.

   • Un angle aigu = an acute angle
   • Une douleur aiguë = a sharp pain

2. High-pitched (sound):
It refers to sounds that have a high frequency.

   • Une voix aiguë = a high-pitched voice

3. Acute (intensity or severity):
It indicates something severe or intense and often sudden.

   • Une crise aiguë = an acute crisis (e.g., in medicine)

Synonyms and differences:

• Pointu: also means "pointed" or "sharp," but more related to the tip or shape of an object rather than sounds or abstract intensity.
Example: Un couteau pointu (a pointed/sharp knife)

• Percutant: means something "striking" or "impactful," often related to effects or statements, rather than physical sharpness or pitch.
Example: Un argument percutant (a striking argument)

• Haut: means “high,” but generally used for height or location, not for sharpness or pitch of sound.

• Fort: usually means "strong" or "loud," as opposed to “aigu” for high-pitched sounds.

Summary:

• Use aigu for sharp angles, acute pains/crises, or high-pitched sounds.
• Use pointu for pointed physical shapes.
• Use other adjectives depending on the nuance (strength, intensity, height).
