comprendre
understand
C’est saisir le sens de quelque chose ou savoir ce que cela veut dire.
The French verb "comprendre" means "to understand" in English. It is used when someone grasps the meaning, significance, or nature of something.
Usage and meaning:
- To understand a concept, idea, or language.
Example: Je comprends le français. (I understand French.) - To comprehend what someone is saying or feeling.
Example: Je ne comprends pas pourquoi tu es triste. (I don’t understand why you are sad.) - Can also mean "to include" or "to consist of" depending on context.
Example: Ce paquet comprend trois livres. (This package includes three books.)
Synonyms and differences:
-
Saisir: Literally "to grasp" or "to seize," used both literally and figuratively. When used figuratively, it means to understand but often emphasizes catching an idea quickly or well.
Example: J’ai saisi son point de vue. (I caught his point of view.) -
Piger: Slang for "to get," "to understand," often informal and used in spoken language.
Example: Tu piges ce que je dis ? (Do you get what I’m saying?) -
Capter: Informal, also slang, similar to "piger," but sometimes more related to catching the meaning or the message.
Example: J’ai pas capté. (I didn’t get it.)
While comprendre is standard and used in formal and informal settings, the synonyms piger and capter are very casual, and saisir is more literary or formal.
