noun

la façade

facade

C’est la partie extérieure d’un bâtiment que l’on voit en premier, souvent décorée ou peinte.

The French word "façade" primarily refers to the front face or exterior side of a building, often the most decorated or important architectural side.

Meaning:

Façade (architecture): The visible front of a building, often designed to be attractive and convey a certain style or grandeur.
Figurative use: It can also mean a false outward appearance that hides a true nature or reality. For example, someone might "wear a façade" to hide their real emotions or intentions.

Synonyms and differences:

Devanture: This refers specifically to the storefront or shop front, usually where shops display their goods. It’s more commercial in context.
Fronton: An architectural term for the front part of a building, especially a triangular section above the door or window.
Visage: Means "face" in the literal sense of a person's face, not used for buildings.
Apparence: Refers to outward appearance in general, not specifically architectural.
Masque: Means "mask," which is more figurative, like hiding true feelings.

Summary:

Use façade when talking about a building's front, especially the decorated or symbolic side.
Use it figuratively when describing a deceptive or superficial outward appearance.
Other synonyms depend on context but don’t always capture both architectural and figurative uses of "façade."
