y aller

go for it

Definition & meaning

Y aller literally means “to go there”, with y replacing a place or destination introduced by à.

  • J’y vais. — I’m going there. / I’m off.
  • Tu y vas demain ? — Are you going there tomorrow?

It is also commonly used in an idiomatic sense:

  1. To go ahead or make an attempt

    • Vas-y ! — Go ahead! / Give it a try!
    • Il faut y aller. — We have to go / We should get started.
  2. To act with a certain degree of force or intensity

    • Vas-y doucement. — Take it easy. / Be gentle.
    • Il y va fort. — He is going too far / He is being very forceful.

The expression j’y vais is also frequently used to announce that one is leaving: “I’m off” or “I’m going now.”

Grammar & Word origin

Y aller consists of:

  • y — an adverbial pronoun meaning “there” or “to that place.” It generally replaces à + place:
    • Je vais à Paris → J’y vais.
  • aller — the verb “to go.”

The pronoun y comes from an older French demonstrative adverb meaning “there.” Aller is an irregular verb whose modern forms developed from several Latin and Gallo-Romance roots.

In the present tense:

  • j’y vais — I go there / I’m going
  • tu y vas — you go there
  • il/elle y va — he/she goes there
  • nous y allons — we go there
  • vous y allez — you go there
  • ils/elles y vont — they go there

In the imperative, the pronoun follows the verb and is joined with a hyphen:

  • Vas-y ! — Go ahead!
  • Allez-y ! — Go ahead! / Please proceed!
