der Balkon, -e
balcony
Ein kleiner Bereich, der außen an einem Gebäude hängt und auf dem man stehen kann.
The German word "Balkon" refers to a "balcony," which is a platform protruding from the exterior wall of a building, enclosed by a railing or balustrade, and accessible from an upper-floor door or window. It is a loanword adopted into German from Italian ("balcone"). The similarity of "Balkon" to English "balcony" and to many other European languages is due to their common origin in the vocabulary that spread with the Renaissance architecture styles across Europe. There aren't many synonyms for "Balkon" as it describes a very specific architectural feature, however, related words include "Terrasse" (terrace), which is similar to a balcony but located on the ground or top of a building, without protruding over the edge.
