Definition & meaning

The German word Definition refers to a precise, logical determination or description of the meaning of a term or concept. Its primary purpose is to establish clear boundaries for a word to ensure it is understood correctly and distinguished from other concepts.

In a broader sense, it can also refer to the act of defining something or the clarity and sharpness of an image or sound, although in the latter case, the term Schärfe is more common in German. In academic and legal contexts, a definition is essential for providing a common ground for discussion and preventing misunderstandings.

Grammar & Word origin

The word is a feminine noun. Its plural form is Definitionen.

The term originates from the Latin noun definitio, which means a "boundary" or "limiting." This stems from the verb definire, composed of the prefix de- (completely/off) and finis (end/boundary). It entered the German language through academic Latin during the late Middle Ages and early modern period.
