gefeiert
celebrate
Es beschreibt jemanden oder etwas, das viele Menschen mögen und loben, oft weil es etwas besonders gut gemacht hat.
Definition & meaning
The word gefeiert has two primary functions in the German language:
- Acclaimed or Celebrated (Adjective): It describes a person, event, or object that receives a great deal of praise, recognition, or public honor. It is frequently used in the context of the arts, such as a gefeiert artist or a gefeiert performance.
- Past Participle of "feiern": It is the past participle form of the verb feiern, meaning "to celebrate" or "to party." In this sense, it indicates that a celebration or ceremony has already occurred.
In modern colloquial German, it is often used to indicate that something was extremely well-received or enjoyed by a group. For example, if a joke or a song was "gefeiert," it means the audience loved it and reacted enthusiastically.
Grammar & Word origin
The word is the Partizip II (past participle) of the weak verb feiern. It is formed by adding the prefix "ge-" and the suffix "-t" to the verb stem "feier".
The etymological root of the word traces back to the Old High German word "fīra," which was borrowed from the Latin word "feriae," meaning "festivals" or "days of rest." Historically, it referred to the cessation of work for religious reasons or public holidays.
As an adjective, gefeiert must be declined to match the gender, case, and number of the noun it precedes (e.g., "ein gefeierter Autor," "die gefeierte Schauspielerin").
