noun

Krummdarm

ileum

Definition & meaning

The Krummdarm is the third and longest part of the small intestine in humans and higher vertebrates. It is the final section of the small intestine, following the Leerdarm and preceding the large intestine. Its primary physiological role is the absorption of vitamin B12, bile salts, and any remaining nutrients that were not processed by the earlier sections of the digestive tract. It ends at the ileocecal valve, which connects it to the Caecum (the beginning of the large intestine).

Grammar & Word origin

The word is a masculine German compound noun. It consists of two parts:

  1. "krumm", which means crooked, curved, or bent.
  2. "Darm", which translates to intestine or gut.

The name describes the winding and convoluted shape of this specific part of the digestive system. In a professional medical context, the Latin term Ileum is more frequently used.

Synonyms & antonyms

Synonyms: The most common medical synonym is Ileum. Another less common German term is Hüftdarm, so named because of its anatomical location near the hip bone.

Antonyms: As an anatomical term, it does not have a direct linguistic opposite. However, it can be contrasted with the other two parts of the small intestine: the Zwölffingerdarm (duodenum), which is the first part, and the Leerdarm (jejunum), which is the middle part. It can also be distinguished from the Dickdarm (large intestine).
