Subjunktion
subjunction
Definition & meaning
In German grammar, a Subjunktion is a type of function word that introduces a subordinate clause (Nebensatz). Its primary role is to connect a dependent clause to a main clause or another subordinate clause, establishing a specific logical relationship between them, such as cause, time, condition, or purpose.
The most distinctive feature of a Subjunktion in the German language is its influence on syntax: when a clause starts with a subjunction, the conjugated verb is pushed to the very end of that clause.
Common examples include:
- weil (because) — indicates a cause.
- obwohl (although) — indicates a concession.
- wenn (if/when) — indicates a condition or time.
- dass (that) — introduces an object or subject clause.
Grammar & Word origin
The term comes from the Latin word subiunctio, which means "joining under" or "subordination." This describes the hierarchical relationship it creates, where one part of the sentence is grammatically dependent on another.
Grammatically, a Subjunktion is indeclinable, meaning it never changes its form regardless of the case, gender, or number of the surrounding words. It belongs to the broader category of Partikeln or Bindewörter .
In linguistic classification, it is the counterpart to the coordinating conjunction, which joins elements of equal rank.
