el nerd

Definition & meaning

In Spanish, the word "nerd" is a loanword adopted directly from English. It is used to describe a person who is extremely enthusiastic, knowledgeable, or obsessed with specific intellectual, academic, or technical subjects, often to the point of being socially awkward or uninterested in mainstream trends.

Depending on the context, it can be used in two ways:

1. Descriptive/Neutral: Referring to someone who is highly intelligent or deeply focused on their studies or hobbies.
2. Pejorative: Used as a form of teasing or bullying to imply that someone is socially inept or physically uncool due to their academic focus.

Grammar & Word origin

"Nerd" is a noun that does not change its form between masculine and feminine in colloquial usage, though it is often treated as masculine by default (el nerd / la nerd). When used as an adjective, it is often treated as an invariable word.

The word originated in the United States in the mid-20th century. Its exact etymology is debated, with theories ranging from a variation of the word "nert" (slang for nut) to a character in a Dr. Seuss book. In Spanish-speaking countries, it has become part of common slang, especially among younger generations, though its usage can vary by region.
